After years of caring for thousands patients in a corporate setting, Dr. Emily Poulos founded Salt + Smile Family Orthodontics to bring something different to the Wilmington community—a boutique, privately owned orthodontic practice centered on exceptional care and meaningful relationships. As the area's only female-founded, locally owned and operated orthodontic practice, Salt + Smile is intentionally independent, allowing Dr. Poulos to focus on what matters most: creating confident smiles and an exceptional patient experience.

Dr. Emily Poulos believes orthodontics is about so much more than straight teeth—it's about building confidence that lasts a lifetime. She is passionate about creating healthy, beautiful smiles while ensuring every patient feels comfortable, valued, and excited about their journey.
A North Carolina native, Dr. Poulos earned dual degrees in Chemistry and Biology from Appalachian State University before continuing her education at North Carolina State University, where she received her Master of Physiology. She attended the University of Maryland School of Dentistry where she received her Doctorate in Dental Surgery. She then went on to advanced specialty training in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics where she earned a Masters in Orthodontics at A. T. Still University School of Dentistry & Oral Health. Her strong scientific background and commitment to lifelong learning allow her to provide personalized, evidence-based orthodontic care for children, teens, and adults.
While Dr. Poulos enjoys treating patients of all ages, she has a special place in her heart for working with children. With 4 children of her own, including a set of twins, her and her husband Matthew, understand he challenges of parenthood and will treat your children as their own. One of her greatest joys is watching them grow throughout treatment—not just physically, but in confidence. Seeing a patient smile for the first time after their braces come off is what inspires her every day.

Dr. Poulos is an active member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, and the American Orthodontic Society, reflecting her dedication to excellence and staying current with the latest advancements in orthodontic care. She is also a member of the NC Dental Society, NC Association of Orthodontists and Cape Fear Dental Study club. Dr. Poulos has been published in the world-renowned Journal of Clinical Orthodontics for her research on 3D printing and technology, which she proudly incorporates into her practice to ensure that every patient receives state-of-the-art care backed by innovation, precision, and a commitment to creating beautiful, lasting smiles.
